How to Calculate Body Fat

Essentially, your weight can be distributed into two main categories. Lean muscle and body fat. The lean muscle part of your body weight is the one that helps you perform daily exercises as well as other body intensive tasks, the body fat part on the other hand is responsible for other important functions such as it provide the necessary excess energy to your body in times of need. For a healthier body there should be proper balance between lean muscle and body fat or an Ideal Body weight.

Finding Body Fat Percentage

There are several ways in which you can calculate the amount of body fat that you possess.  Primarily we use Body Mass Index (BMI) value to find whether a person is Under weight, Obese or Severely Obese.  Refer BMI chart for more detail. Body fat calculator formula for men:

  • 495/(1.0324-0.19077(Circumference of (waist-neck))+0.15456(Body height))-450

Body fat calculator formula for women:

  • 495/(1.29579-0.35004 (Circumference of (waist+hip-neck))+0.22100(Body Height)) – 450

Note:-All measurements are in centimeters

These two methods give a rough value of the body fat that you have. After calculating your body fat you can choose to multiply it by your total weight in order to find your actual body fat weight.

Visit a doctor or use necessary devices

In case you want a more accurate measurement of your body fat, you can always visit a doctor who has the necessary equipment such as skin calipers or bioelectrical impedance monitors which can give an accurate measurement of your body fat.
